Retiring Montgomery County police chief Marcus Jones was approved Tuesday as the county school system’s chief security officer.

Montgomery County Public Schools does not have traditional school resource officers, but officers can come into schools at designated work stations. In recent years, parents and students have voiced concerns about potential violence, vaping, fentanyl-related overdoses and fake bomb threats. As a part of his new role, Jones will take charge of forming the safety plans for the district, which has over 160,000 students enrolled. He is expected to act as a liaison between the school system and emergency personnel, such as the police and fire departments. Most recently, the position was held by Michelle Ezeofor-Andrews, who wasforce for nearly 40 years. The native of South Boston, Va., joined the force in 1985 and worked as a patrolman and a detective before becoming a sergeant in 2000.
The school system has also been the target of fake bomb threats that have disrupted school days. Seven of these threats, called “swatting,”back in October. Most recently, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School was the target of a swatting threat that sent SWAT teams and put the school on lockdownto gain entry into the building. The school system also used money it received from a legal settlement with Juul to purchase vape detectors.
