City leaders are working to grow the ranks of the Montgomery Police Department, offering bonuses and even running a Super Bowl commercial to attract new officers.

) - City leaders are working to grow the ranks of the Montgomery Police Department, offering bonuses and even running a Super Bowl commercial to attract new officers. MPD took it a step further Thursday, opening its doors and putting prospective recruits through the same physical training officers complete.

“Anybody who wants to be a police officer can come out today and try the physical training we do so our officers can do the job,” Montgomery Police Chief Jim Graboys said.Lt. Thornton Bester, an MPD recruiter, said candidates must meet a strict set of physical standards.Recruits also take a physical agility test that includes several job-specific challenges. “You have to do the physical agility test, which consists of pushing a police car, jumping over a 6-foot fence, going through a window and pulling a 150-pound dummy 15 feet,” Bester said. Passing the physical portion is only the first step, Bester said, adding that the department is looking for recruits who are passionate about serving the community. One participant, Sacoria Garvin, completed the course and passed. She said she decided to try out because she wants to help improve Montgomery. “I’m originally from Miami, Florida, but my family moved to Montgomery when I was in elementary school. I saw a lot of injustices, and I would like to make a difference in Montgomery,” Garvin said. MPD is offering a $15,000 recruiting incentive for new hires, along with free and discounted college tuition at participating universities. Graboys said events like Thursday’s tryouts are designed to encourage people who feel called to public service to see whether they have what it takes. “We want people to come out to these because we want people who have the heart to serve our citizens and think they have what it takes to be one of us,” Graboys said. “Come out here and try out.” MPD’s next tryouts are scheduled for April 8 and 18 at 9 a.m. Both will be held at the Montgomery Police Department’s outdoor range on Old Hayneville Road.Court documents reveal details about Prattville teacher’s arrest in online predator stingSouth Alabama man arrested on sexual assault charge
