Hundreds of children got tips on how to have a safe holiday during the Montgomery Police Department’s annual Halloween safety event on Sunday at 10 Civic Center Ave. in the village.

The children turned out in costumes with their collection buckets ready and scooped up treats along with the safety information. “We emphasize safety,” Montgomery Police Cmdr. Ismel Diaz said about the event. After visiting several spots offering safety tips and playing games, children could redeem prizes they could take home. The event also included raffles. Some of the prizes given away at the event included bikes, dolls, toys and more. One of the more popular events was the “Chalk with a Cop.

” Montgomery Police Deputy Chief Armando Sanders has run the event for a number of years that involves a police officer and children making chalk art together. Police said the Sunday event offered a chance to offer important safety tips to kids and parents. “We ask the parents to inspect the child’s candy first ,” Sanders said. “We obviously want them to be safe, so it is very important.
