Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed signed a new ordinance on Friday morning requiring a valid photo ID to carry a concealed firearm.

) - The Alabama State Attorney General’s office says it violates state law.

The ordinance states that if you cannot provide a valid photo ID, the firearm will be confiscated and held by MPD for 30 days. After the 30-day hold, it will then be destroyed. In order to get the firearm back, the person will be required to provide a photo ID, proof of ownership, and pay a $150 fine.

A spokesperson from the State Attorney General’s office released a statement today saying, “The Montgomery City Council’s ordinance related to firearms violates state law.
