Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed says the perception of crime in the city is not what it seems after a critical letter sent by a local police organization.
MONTGOMERY , Ala. - Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has responded to criticism of his administration and the Montgomery Police Department, saying the perception of crime in the city is unfair.
That response was to a letter from local Fraternal Order of Police President Everette Johnson, who raised concerns about crime and the police department’s officer shortage. Johnson says the department currently has 290 officers but should have 490. Johnson also says in the letter that his organization is willing to help develop solutions. Reed says he believes the FOP has other motives.
Meanwhile, Reed says the city is continuing talks of pay raises for MPD, which aims to address the officer shortage.
