A new DEA proposal that would reclassify marijuana as a schedule 3 drug has the Montgomery County sheriff reminding citizens that the drug is still illegal.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham is warning residents that Alabama still criminalizes marijuana. This comes in the wake of a proposal from the Drug Enforcement Administration that would reclassify it from a schedule 1 to a schedule 3 controlled substance.

“Don’t think that just because they’re lowering it, that they’re opening up the door for it. So that’s not the case,” Cunningham said.“This is something that I kind of had a feeling it was coming down pretty soon,” Cunningham said. “If you ask me, it is a gateway drug,” the sheriff said. “That’s how we start off with marijuana and then we move up to something else.”
