The gathering came just days after a shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney that left 15 people dead, including a child.

) - Dozens of members of Montgomery ’s Jewish community gathered inside the city hall Monday night to mark the second night of Hanukkah and to honor the victims of a deadly attack at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia.

Two candles were lit on a menorah inside the hall as attendees stood together in song. The ceremony focused on remembrance and solidarity. After the lighting, the crowd shared wine and donuts; police were on hand to ensure the celebration remained secure. The gathering came just days after a shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney that left 15 people dead, including a child. Two gunmen opened fire in what Australia’s prime minister called an antisemitic act of terrorism. That pain was felt thousands of miles away in Montgomery. Mayor Steven Reed addressed the crowd, linking the city’s civil-rights history to the need to stand against hate. “With Montgomery’s role in the civil-rights movement, we understand what hate can do and what it brings,” Reed said. “For us, it’s always important to recognize when there is hate out there, to call crimes what they are and to show solidarity.” State Representative Phillip Ensler also spoke, reminding the crowd of the Jewish community’s resilience. “We have been attacked. People have tried to annihilate us and tried to make us go away,” Ensler said. “But we persevere and we keep showing up for good times and challenging times.” Hanukkah lasts eight nights. This year’s observance runs through Dec. 22, with candle lighting ceremonies continuing each night.18 states will limit junk food from SNAP benefits next yearUnion Springs family faces another tragedy after car crash leaves loved one on life support
