After the lighting, the crowd shared wine and donuts; police were on hand to ensure the celebration remained secure. Mayor Steven Reed addressed the crowd, linking the city’s civil-rights history to the need to stand against hate. “With Montgomery’s role in the civil-rights movement, we understand what hate can do and what it brings,” Reed said. “For us, it’s always important to recognize when there is hate out there, to call crimes what they are and to show solidarity.” State Representative Phillip Ensler also spoke, reminding the crowd of the Jewish community’s resilience. “We have been attacked.
