Mon, March 11th 2024 at 12:08 PMGOODYEAR, Ariz. - After being limited to one appearance for the New York Yankees last season due to a shoulder injury, Frankie Montas will throw the first pitch of the 2024 regular season for the Cincinnati Reds.
Manager David Bell announced after Sunday's spring training game with the Cleveland Guardians that Montas, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, will be this year's starter on Opening Day against the Washington Nationals on March 28 in Great American Ball Park. “It’s a tough decision,” said Bell. “Only one guy can pitch. Frankie’s done some things in his career. Just because of his experience and how much success he’s had. It’s a tough call. Obviously, Opening Day in Cincinnati is really important to all of our guys. That’s acknowledged 100 percent, but game two will be just as important.”
The Reds signed Montas in January to a one-year, $14 million contract with a $20 million mutual option for 2025.Bell also mentioned that Hunter Greene, last year's Opening Day starter, will slot at No. 2 in the rotation, and will first pitch on March 30 against the Nationals.
