The second season of Ryan Murphy's Monster franchise, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menedez Story, is now streaming on Netflix and has made plenty of waves on social media. Nicholas Alexander Chavez and They/Them's Cooper Koch play the siblings, and the show dramatizes the events from the night they murdered their parents all the way through their life without parole sentencing.
Screen Rant interviewed Koch and Chavez about their approach to Erik and Lyle Menendez in Monsters season 2, whose suffering they felt deep sympathy for. The actors shared the delicate tightrope they walked between the scandalous headlines surrounding the story and their own sensitive portrayals of the real men's pain.
Screen Rant: Nicholas, were there any specific nuances or traits you focused on bringing to Lyle's character that most people may not be familiar with? Screen Rant: Playing brothers in such an intense story requires a very strong dynamic. How did you build your chemistry with each other to effectively portray the bond between Erik and Lyle Menendez?
Cooper Koch: I think that I stand with them. I understand how they feel. It's incredibly difficult for them because this is their family, and it's so hard to see this happen in a televised, theatrical, dramatized version. So, I get it. Cooper Koch: Yeah, I just really wanted to bring humanity to Erik. I wanted people to believe him; I wanted people to sympathize with him. I think that was my main goal.
