When it comes to enjoying a game on Steam Deck, my opinion doesn't matter. Neither does Valve's 'Deck Verified' program.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds is currently the 5th most played game on Steam Deck this week. And that’s a curious fact, because I declared Monster Hunter Wilds completely, which is ranked 21 out of 100 on the handheld’s Top Played chart during the past year.
I consider that vastly more playable than Monster Hunter Wilds, yet it’s considered “Unsupported" by Valve. Here’s the thing, though: in the end, none of that matters. The media’s evaluation of the game’s performance doesn’t matter. My opinion doesn’t matter. The compatibility rating Valve slaps onto a game doesn’t matter. If a game launches and runs, and if that game is popular enough, Steam Deck owners are bound to play it on their Steam Decks. When I last checked in on Monster Hunter Wilds’ Steam Deck performance, it barely managed 30FPS at the absolute lowest graphics settings, and frequently looked like a dull, smeary mess. Trying to improve the frame rate by flipping on any kind of frame generation resulted in awful visual artifacts, especially during fast traversal or combat., people would praise it as a brilliant port. Maybe not an “impossible port” like Doom Eternal, but still a damn impressive one.26 Million Devices Hit By Infostealers—Bank Cards Leaked To Dark WebNormal gamers are perfectly willing to accept visual compromises and frame rate dips. Sometimes it feels like press, YouTubers, and especially graphics cards companies like AMD and Nvidia want you to forget that. As someone who covers this stuff for a living, sometimesAt this point, I’ll remind you that we all used to be ecstatic to gather 'round the TV and enjoy Goldeneye 64 or Perfect Dark split-screen multiplayer at about 15FPS. And who can forget crafting custom spells that would turn The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind into a slideshow on Xbox?Maybe that’s what is happening with Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam Deck. People aren’t paying attention to performance verdicts or compatibility labels. They’re playing the game, rough edges or not, because they love it and the affordable Steam Deck might just be their only way of experiencing it. Of course, as PC gamers always do, they’ll fix what AAA publishers won’t. So if you’re desperate to have a smoother experience with Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam Deck, check out a new mod called “” The mod, available on Nexus Mods, attempts to create a more playable configuration, and the description of the mod includes a wealth of tips and tweaks to improve framerates on other Steam Deck titles, too.
