Blondie’s two boy cubs are hitting developmental markers. Their latest: exploring a new habitat.

Monrovia’s brother bear cubs explore their new outdoor habitat at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center on May 12. The cubs’ mother, known as Blondie to her Monrovia supporters, was euthanized shortly before the cubs were brought to the center, after she swiped at a woman walking her dog in Monrovia on March 14, leaving her with minor injuries.

black bear cubs from Monrovia moved into new outdoor digs Tuesday, May 12, a milestone that their keepers hope brings them one step closer to returning to the wild. San Diego Humane Society provided an update on the two brothers, who were moved into a specialized den area at its Ramona Wildlife Center, their home since March.

The outdoor space was built with a grant from the Ellen Browning Scrupps Foundation and decorated with live edge wood from a local sawmill, as well as native plants such as mulberry and pine to mimic nature. A leaf-covered wooden ladder simulates the wilderness.

“Moving outside is a big step,” said Autumn Welch, wildlife operations manager at San Diego Humane Society. “The cubs are gaining confidence, exploring and learning the skills they’ll need to survive on their own. ” The brother bear cubs arrived in Ramona on March 15, one day after their mother, known as Blondie to Monrovia supporters, was euthanized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife .

Blondie had swiped at and injured a woman out walking her dog on March 14. Her DNA was later linked by Fish and Wildlife to a June 2025 incident where a bear injured a man sitting on his porch in the foothill city. One of two bear cubs orphaned in March climbs the enclosure of his new habitat at the Ramona Wildlife Center in that city on May 12.

Donations are needed to care for the brother bears until they can be released into the wild, sdhumane.org/wildlife. in Monrovia who bemoan Blondie’s death as unnecessary and continue to call for policy changes within the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Monrovia city leaders have joined their call for more cooperation with the department.runs the viral Pool Bear Life Instagram account that chronicles visits from all sorts of wildlife, but especially bears.

Thankful both cubs are thriving with a support system in place, in the absence of their mother, Gordon said he’s hopeful they are able to gain important life lessons needed for their survival and ultimate release back into the wild.of improvements needed within CDFW policies and transparency,” Gordon said, referring to the California Wildlife Coexistence Act now in the state Senate. ” The need for change still exists for these cubs, mother bears and communities coexisting with diverse animal populations.

Blondie‘s legacy lives on through them, hopefully bringing the necessary changes that will help protect their future. ”Back in the wildlife center, the humane society’s Project Wildlife team has given the brothers specialized care with the goal of getting CDFW’s OK to release them to the wild when they are old enough. Staff have limited human contact with the cubs, wearing bear masks and animal furs rubbed in natural scents to hide their human smell when they spoon fed them.

They would also crawl into their previous enclosure to mimic how their mother would have acted. The cubs have also graduated from drinking formula to eating gruel and solid food, favoring fruit and leaves from native plants, their caregivers report. They eat three meals a day and are feeding on their own more and more, a good sign of growing strength and independence.

Now four or five months old, the cubs will be introduced to a larger habitat with continued access to this new den, Thompson said. In the meantime, looking after the brother bears requires much resources and time, so San Diego Humane Society is asking for public support to help fund the bears’ care. The humane society does not receive state funding and relies on donations to help animals in need. To help the Monrovia bear cubs, visit sdhumane.org/monroviabears.
