Monroe, No. 12 in the NJ.com Top 20, has swiftly emerged as one of the top teams in New Jersey. Grabbing a pair of ranked victories last week, Monroe showed that they are not finished cementing themselves as a legitimate contender coming out of Middlesex County.
After a trade-off of six separate ties in the first game to knot it at 11-all, Monroe zipped to a 14-0 run that had the crowd and bench increasing in infectious elation. Ava Kwitkoski cranked five kills over that stretch to lead the charge of a locked-in Falcons group that didn’t let the moment get too big for them.
The Monroe faithful quietly looked on each time Kwitkoski rose up for the hit. But when she produced the point, the crowd exploded. “We get so hyped up beforehand. We have this ‘phone game’ ritual where one player pretends to answer the phone and talk to someone. Then they do a dance move, which gets everyone excited,” Kwitkoski said.
The senior setter was adamant that the season Monroe is unveiling is attributed to everyone who supports the Falcons. Nieves has been the general for Monroe in 2023. She is just a few ticks under 500 digs for her career, leading a back-row defense that constantly kept the ball off the floor against an Old Bridge offense loaded with strength.
Grau added six digs alongside Kwitkoski and Kristina Latosh going for five and two, respectively. Latosh also contributed four kills and a pair of blocks. Hannah Weinmann tabbed five kills while Sarah Levy tallied a kill and four blocks.
