Mondli Makhanya in Qatar | Africa's chances in Qatar hang by a thread
Russia 2018 was a nightmare, with not even one of the five African representatives making it past the group stages. Would things be different in Qatar this year? Hopes were certainly high that Senegal and Cameroon would fly the continent’s flag high.
The Indomitable Lions keeled over and allowed Cameroon-born Breel Embolo to lift the spirits of the Swiss and break the hearts of his native land. They knocked on Senegal’s door several times before the Senegalese players turned up the heat with two quick goals. After getting one back, Qatar fancied their chances of equalising when they reduced the deficit with 12 minutes of normal time left. But the belief was to be short-lived when Senegal sealed the deal in the 87th minute.
Ghana still have South Korea and Uruguay next, so qualifying for the knockout stages will be a tall order. Fresh from the humiliation at the hands of Japan, the Germans will want to raise their game against the group leaders and avoid the ignoble repeat of 2018, when they didn’t even make it past the group stages.
When asked about the Qataris’ 11th hour ban of beer-drinking at the stadiums, England’s Eric Dier promised that he and his team-mates would make sure the fans forget that their throats were parched.
