Mondli Makhanya: Covid-19 has reminded us of the brutality of poverty.
Week in and week out, you see thousands lining up in townships and informal settlements across South Africa. Their faces speak of pain and hope. The pain of having gone without food for days and the hope that this will be the day they will be able to line their stomachs with something. Where the next meal after this food parcel will come from is not even on their minds – it is today they are concerned about.
“Our people haven’t received any food. There is no one who has received food and people are dying from hunger because we are not going to work, we are not getting paid. There is no food. Inequality was in our faces. When you landed in Cape Town, you could not avoid seeing the stark contrast between the poverty you passed on your way from the airport and the affluence you arrived at when you got to the City Bowl.
