French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans for a major renovation and expansion of the Louvre Museum, including a dedicated room for the Mona Lisa. The project, expected to take several years, will address overcrowding and outdated facilities, with a new entrance near the Seine River planned for 2031.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that the Mona Lisa will receive its own dedicated room inside the Louvre museum. Macron stated that the museum will undergo a major renovation and expansion, a project that will span several years. The renovation plans include a new entrance near the River Seine, scheduled to open by 2031, and the creation of underground rooms. Macron unveiled these plans during a speech delivered in the Louvre room where the Mona Lisa is currently displayed.
While the French president did not disclose the cost, estimations suggest that the modernization of the world's most visited museum, currently plagued by overcrowding and outdated facilities, could reach hundreds of millions of euros. The Louvre's last significant overhaul dates back to the 1980s with the unveiling of the iconic glass pyramid. However, the museum is now considered to fall short of international standards.Louvre Director Laurence des Cars sent a note to Culture Minister Rachida Dati earlier this month expressing various concerns. In the document, first released by French newspaper Le Parisien, she warned about the gradual deterioration of the building due to water leaks, temperature fluctuations, and other issues, posing a risk to the preservation of artworks. The pyramid, serving as the museum's entrance and unveiled in 1989 as part of late President François Mitterrand's project, now appears outdated. The building lacks proper insulation against both cold and heat, amplifying noise and creating an uncomfortable environment for both visitors and staff, des Cars emphasized. An official at the French presidency stated, 'We're faced with a collective challenge: how can we adapt the Louvre to meet expectations, welcome visitors from around the world in comfortable conditions, and simultaneously lead a commitment to artistic and cultural education?' The financing required for such a substantial renovation remains unspecified, but any work at the former royal palace is expected to be both costly and technically complex. The Pompidou Center, another prominent Parisian museum, is slated to close for a five-year renovation worth 262 million euros, starting at the year's end
