Upon examining the chemical structures of the paints utilized by the Italian artist, scientists and art historians in France and the UK found that the base layer’s rare compound was different in the oil-paint recipe. The team employed advanced techniques to gather the empirical data, including high-angular resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
