Necalli Cultural Movement began in February 2022 when a group of moms met at a bar to talk about how to get their children to learn folkloric dance. Since then, the class of six children has grown to 45 children and adults who gather 'to instill and develop an appreciation and pride in the Mexican and Hispanic arts.
When Nancy Del Toro’s daughters were invited by a friend to join the Necalli Cultural Movement, she jumped at the chance for them to learn more about their heritage. “I’m first-generation Mexican American — born and raised here. I feel like I lost a lot of the traditions,” the Midlothian resident explained. “With the second generation. They’re not as in tune. … Getting in touch with their roots really gives them an identity. And they enjoy it while they’re doing it.
Mexico has 31 states, and each state has at least 20 dances, many with their own style of outfits. Miranda Villanueva, 16, of Midlothian is one of the original dancers with the group. “I decided to join Necalli because I’ve always had a passion for dance and folklorico specifically. I love to be able to share my culture with others,” she said. “My family loves that I’m a dancer. They love seeing how beautiful our makeup and dresses make our dances look.
