of Carter Mannon, who is severely allergic to peanuts, last December. Now, his mom says it has gone viral and there is a lot of misinformation, making the whole thing more stressful. Shawna Mannon says it started with a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, which got five million views and it continues on X and TikTok, spreading misinformation and making it worse. This comes as last night-- the board of trustees started talking about changes to the district’s food allergy policies. Shawna Mannon thinks the incident wasn’t addressed appropriately back in October. “In the beginning, when we spoke with the coaches, you know that was one of my concerns was we have to make sure there is adequate discipline here and that there is no retaliation,” she said.But retaliation is exactly what happened, Mannon says. It all started in October when her son Carter told his teammates he was deadly allergic to peanuts. After that, she says, some tossed peanuts at him, and then he found peanuts in his locker and his cleats. “Whenever he went to go and grab his stuff for the game, the residue got on his arm and so he developed hives on his arm,” his mom said. If the peanut residue had gotten in his mouth or nose, he would have gone into anaphylactic shock.to make school staff more aware of severe food allergies. “On an annual basis, the district will provide general food allergy awareness training to all employees that address our food allergy management plan, policies, and procedures, general strategies to reduce risk of exposure, signs, and symptoms of severe allergic reactions, and emergency response,” said one official at the meeting. Those changes will be finalized later. In the meantime, Shawna Mannon says what happened to Carter has gone viral on X and TikTok – and she says some influencers are putting out misinformation. “I’ve been getting phone calls from parents who are angry with me for stirring the pot. There’s no pot. I haven’t stirred it,” Shawna Mannon said. She’s hoping it dies down soon. “People just went nuts with it and it’s just gotten ugly. You know, that’s not our family, that’s not what we’re about.” Shawna Mannon asked that we mention the support Carter and his family have gotten from UT athletes and from the community at large. She says she wants a law that makes it illegal to purposely expose people with severe allergies to that allergen.
