Painting the exterior of your house black — or really dark — is becoming increasingly popular in San Antonio. What's the appeal?

Blair Jones was planning to build a spec house in Alamo Heights several years ago when he visited Local Coffee in Pearl , owned by his friend Robby Grubbs . “Robby used this accent color in the shop that I really liked,” said Jones, who owns an eponymous home building company based in San Antonio . He later learned the color is called Iron Ore . Manufacturer Sherwin-Williams describes as a “cool, deep and mysterious charcoal.

In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy's Cooling Your Home Naturally report said that dark, dull colors can absorb 70% to 90% of the sun's radiant energy. This is compared to lighter-colored surfaces that reflect heat away from a home, keeping it cooler, according to Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
