As more of the Democrats' impeachment findings come to light, some in the caucus want to keep to one lane

A group of House Democratic centrists is warning its caucus that any case against President Donald Trump should steer clear of Robert Mueller — resurfacing an ugly internal debate on impeachment that could complicate the coming weeks.

The warning from vulnerable Democrats follows Nadler’s remarks at the Judiciary panel’s first impeachment hearing Wednesday in which he made a significant connection between Trump’s obstruction of Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and his potential abuse of power in pressuring Ukraine to help his reelection campaign.

The real shift in the caucus, however, came in late September amid revelations about a whistleblower complaint detailing a phone call in which Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden in exchange for millions in military aid. Since then, Pelosi and other senior Democrats have repeatedly stressed the importance of keeping their impeachment inquiry focused on Ukraine.

Multiple Democrats have said they believe an obstruction of justice article would likely be based on Trump's efforts to thwart or even shut down the Mueller probe. Some of the same alleged behavior — including intimidating witnesses — has also arisen in the Ukraine probe.Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, one of more than three dozen Democratic candidates who flipped GOP-held seats in 2018, made clear Wednesday that she thinks Ukraine is where the impeachment probe should stay focused.
