) - A steady stream of folks descended on gas stations and convenience stores, just over the Alabama line, looking for some Christmas Eve magic. The Powerball drawing Wednesday will be the fourth-richest in U.
S. history. The odds are long – one in 292.2 million. And if you win, you won’t actually be a billionaire. Most people opt for the one-time cash payout, $781.3 million. And taxes will take a chunk of that. Depending on what state you live in, you’ll be left with about $450 million. All that’s not stopping folks like Anna Seals, who made the drive from Mobile to the Circle K off U.S. 63 in Moss Point.Seals said she would take care of some bills and help other people. And she never would have to worry about money again.Retired university professor Phil Feldman joked that his Powerball ticket is his investment. He said if he won, he would travel more and would like to set up an education-related foundation. “Scholarships, research,” he said. “You know, we’ve got a great university in Mobile, the University of South Alabama. And that would be a great opportunity to have a real big impact on an institution like that.” Jenny Momin, who owns Moss Point Marathon on Mississippi Highway 613, said she has seen a steady flow of customers. “I have bunch of people from Alabama, Florida, and a lot of people traveling because this is Christmas week,” she said. “I have bunch of people. They’re buying, like, hundreds dollars of lottery – like, Powerball, especially.” Like many of the folks in line in Mississippi, Feldman is from Alabama, one of five states without a lottery. He said that should change. “If you look around, you see all the money leaving Alabama to Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia,” he said. “I mean, it’s insane that we don’t participate in something like that that could do so much good for so many folks.”Florida Capitol sees unprecedented year with historic snow, political battles
