Be aware of a scam involving a lawn care service charging exorbitant prices. The Mobile Police Department advises residents to be cautious and never pay upfront without a written contract.
The Mobile Police Department is warning residents of an ongoing scam in our area. Recently, a group of men from Georgia began operating a lawn care service where they lay pine straw. The men charge $8 a roll, but don't provide the total amount due until the job is finished. Upon finishing the work, the victims are then charged upwards of $5,000 for the job, which in some cases, doesn't equal the price.
These men do not provide any invoice, they have no business name and they do not have a business license within Alabama, Mobile or in Mobile County. The City of Mobile, along with The Department of Revenue, has cited them for operating without a business license. We ask you to inform your audience of this scam so that others aren't left in the hole going into the holidays. You should never pay anything up front without getting it in writing. You also want to make sure the business you're working with is reputable. Make sure you're involved in the process every step of the way and that the workers are getting approval from you on any higher amounts that may arise before the work begins
