) - The chief of the Mobile Police Department on Friday praised his officers and reported to the public that there were no major injuries on the city’s roadways during this week’s winter weather event.

Mobile experienced a record-breaking snowfall on Tuesday and days of extreme cold temperatures that made driving condition hazardous across the city and region. “I am extremely proud and grateful for the men and women of the Mobile Police Department who have worked relentlessly this week to respond to calls across the city,” Chief William R. Jackson said in a statement. “This unprecedented weather event created hazardous driving conditions for our officers and for the citizens of Mobile, but thankfully, we had no major injuries on our roadways.”

From the start of the winter weather Tuesday morning to Friday morning, the chief said, the police department responded to more than 180 storm-related calls for service, including stranded drivers and vehicle crashes. In addition to responding to those calls, MPD officers helped clear dozens of roadways using shovels, large equipment and other means to assist in making sure citizens could safely commute to and from their destinations, Jackson said.Jackson added, “I appreciate everyone’s patience over the last several days, and I can’t thank you enough for acknowledging our travel recommendations and guidance this week.
