) - The sound of bagpipes echoed through Public Safety Memorial Park Thursday morning as law enforcement officers, city leaders and grieving families gathered to honor officers who dedicated their lives to protecting the community.
The annual ceremony, held during National Police Week, recognized officers who died in the line of duty as well as retired officers who later passed away after years of service. Families stood shoulder to shoulder as the names of loved ones were read aloud, many wiping away tears while listening to the tribute. Officials said the memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices officers and their families make every day.
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch, Mobile District Attorney Keith Blackwood, and Mobile Police Chief William Jackson read the names of several officers honored during the event, including members of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. A large crowd of officers from multiple agencies filled the park, standing silently in remembrance of colleagues lost over the years. Mobile Director of Public Safety Curtis Graves said the ceremony is about more than a single day of remembrance.
He added that the impact of losing an officer extends far beyond the department itself.
“We mourn when they are injured, we mourn when they die. The impact of law enforcement has a ripple effect of the lives who wear the badge,” Graves stated.
“We pray for their families — that you would remove the sting of death and replace it with love and joy,” one speaker said during the memorial prayer. As the ceremony came to a close and the final notes of the bagpipes faded away, officials encouraged the community to continue remembering those who served.
“To remember the fallen is something we should do regularly. We should reflect them in our prayers,” Graves said.
