Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson says he hopes to secure a corporate partnership to revitalize the Mobile Civic Center in the next six months.
reporters, Stimpson reiterated his pitch to work with an outside operating partner on the civic center, in an effort to defray the cost of revitalizing the nearly 60-year-old complex.
But in addition to the operating partner, Stimpson also argued that the city should also try to secure sponsors to assist in the rebuild of the civic center, in exchange for naming rights or another benefit. “At this point in time, the city is not wanting to foot the whole bill and go to the bond market and borrow $180 million for the rebuild,” Stimpson said. “We don’t think that we have to, we think that we can entice others to join us in what will be a very attractive rebuild.”
Though he said the city has not secured an operating partner for the civic center yet, Stimpson said the city is hoping to find one in the next six months because of the delays in constructing an office building for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the site.
