Despite a week-long delay due to cold weather, the City of Mobile officially kicked off the Mardi Gras season by illuminating the festive purple and gold Mardi Gras Tree. The event, marked by Mayor Sandy Stimpson's final tree-lighting ceremony as mayor, underscored the city's commitment to safety during the festivities, particularly in light of recent events in New Orleans.

) - It was delayed a week by cold weather — but Thursday night the City of Mobile lit the Mardi Gras Tree.“Lee: I saw you dancing. I see you have a MoonPie. You have your beads on and you’re ready? – I am ready for Mardi Gras. Yes. — Lee: What are you looking forward to the most? – The balls because I love to dress up,” said one woman.

With the big Christmas tree now transitioned to purple & gold — Mayor Sandy Stimpson flipping the big switch for the last time as mayor — not only turning on the lights -- but ushering in the Port City’s favorite time of year — one that will be hyper-focused on safety. Four weeks from tomorrow night — the Conde Cavaliers will roll — making way for three weeks of parades, throws, MoonPies, balls — & nonstop fun!
