An alarming number of young people - 642 - were shot and taken to University Hospital between 2018 and June of 2023, according to documents submitted to the Mobile City Council. It's the number one killer of our youth, and officials say the problem is getting worse each year. Now, we're learning the city of Mobile , USA Health and the Mobile County Health Department are working together to implement a hospital-based violence intervention program to help reduce the gun violence.
According to city council documents, the program will include bedside support for patients with a gunshot, referrals to community programs to help with things like housing and food insecurity. The program also includes staff following up with those gunshot victims and their families months after their released. The city council at its Tuesday meeting voted to accept $120,000 in funding assistance for the program from the Mobile County Health Department.
