"Right now, I’m a NO." It was that statement this week by District 6 council member Josh Woods that let hopeful Amtrak riders in Mobile know the train had not yet left the station and might not ever.
"When I started to see we could lose the possibility of losing Amtrak here I felt like we had to do our part to advocate for it to return,” says Bryan Fuenmayor. The group has been present at several council meetings, but now they're planning on taking their message to residents of District 6, leaving flyers to make their points as to why they believe Amtrak will be good for Mobile.
Cowart made that point to the council as he encouraged the city to abandon or redirect a one dollar per hotel room tourism assessment collected by the city's Tourism Improvement District, or TID."The problem is we don't have a good tourism plan in Mobile. We're not spending money wisely. We're just throwing money at it.""We're seeing a six and a half percent growth in lodging revenue year over year and that's better than any major city in Alabama.
