Elliot Maisel, former chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority, stated, 'We're in the golden age of Mobile.' A lot of times, people don't realize and visualize things like that until some years down the road.' The park outside the Arthur Outlaw Mobile Convention Center is expected to be finished this month. The $9 million project, inspired by former Major League Baseball star Cleon Jones, will include 9-foot statues of five baseball Hall of Famers from the Mobile area, as well as NFL Hall of Famer Robert Brazile. Construction on the $38 million, six-story building on the southeast corner of the Civic Center property is progressing steadily, with the final touches expected soon. The agency is anticipated to move in by March. A city-owned parking deck is also being built alongside the corps building. This five-level, 1,000-space structure will accommodate corps employees and the public attending events at the new civic center. Demolition of the 1960s-era domed arena, the Civic Center, is well underway. City officials aim to start construction in February of a state-of-the-art arena with a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
