Mobile County has a new tool to help improve road safety and reduce accidents involving county vehicles. The county commission has implemented two state-of-the-art motor vehicle and heavy truck driving simulators.

The Mobile County Sheriff's Office is wrapping up its driving training and training for public works employees is already underway. “We want the operator to get comfortable in a safe environment and learn different skills and improve their skills,” said Mobile County safety coordinator Charles Miller. Loaded with over one hundred different scenarios and three hundred vehicles, these simulators give drivers a safe and realistic environment to practice driving. “The chairs and the steering and all the controls are very similar to the actual vehicle. They are very impressed once they get off it the first time,” said Miller. So far, Miller says the simulators have received positive feedback from the team at the sheriff's office along with public works employees. “It's very important for the training to ensure that our public officials and our county employees are operating safely, and we're presenting a very good product to the customer, which is the public,” said Miller. Miller says the machines can simulate chases, pit maneuvers, traffic violations, and more. It even has a seatbelt, steering wheel, keys, and air conditioning. “The trainer will be sitting at a computer. He can change weather conditions, make it day or night. He can have you have a blowout. He can make it where your brakes fail, all different types of things. You may have been through a scenario before, but the trainer can change it up on you, just by changing the weather conditions or making something fail on the vehicle,” said Tim Smith, Mobile County risk manager. The seats can move, and the system can simulate sirens and sounds. Smith says it is pretty easy to use and very realistic. “By repetition, you learn, and if you run into a situation in the real world, you do not have to think about it. It is just muscle memory, and you react already knowing what to do. That is part of why we want to keep people going through it,” he said.
