) - Water is already rising in parts of Mobile County, and one local business is stepping up with free sand to help community members prepare for potential flooding.
Rising water is already visible in the Dog River area. Meanwhile, a large pile of sand sits at Woerner Turf and Landscape Supply on Cottage Hill Road, free for community members to take what they need to prepare. Outlet Manager Justin Kennedy says the business wants to offer help where it can.
“We are an active member in our community. We’ve served our customers in the community here for decade. We just want to be able to supply those needs in a time of need,” Kennedy said.
“We all know this bad weather is on the way, so we’re just trying to help people where we can. Sand is a pretty malleable material. If you put it in a bag you can really pack it down. Using sandbags is a great way to prevent water from getting up to your doorstep and ultimately getting inside your house or other unwanted areas.
” Kennedy says anyone who wants the free sand should bring their own bag and shovel. He says the supply is first come, first serve and once it’s gone, it’s gone. Mike Evans, director of Mobile County Emergency Management Agency, says if you’re in flood prone areas like Midtown, it’s better to act now if you’re going to use sandbags before it’s too late.
Evans says there are four common mistakes: placing bags directly against exterior walls, waiting until water is already flowing, using only a single row and leaving gaps between bags. He says it’s best to place the first row lengthwise with bags overlapping like bricks, build a base three times wider than the height and tamp each bag firmly into place. Evans recommends placing sandbags near doorways, entry doors, garage doors, low spots around the structure, around vents and crawlspace openings.
