The money for the improvements comes from oil and gas lease revenues paid to Alabama through the federal Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funds.

Published: Aug. 10, 2024, 4:14 p.m.A Mobile County public boat ramp will be closed next week for major facility upgrades that are being financed with $2 million in oil and gas lease revenues to the State of Alabama.

The Mount Vernon Public Boat Ramp will be closed beginning on Monday and will not reopen for approximately three months while construction is underway. The state gets 37.5% of federal royalties from new Gulf oil and natural gas leases, according to the 2006 law that established GOMESA. Three other Gulf states – Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana – also share in the lease revenues.

The funds are used for coastal conservation and preservation projects, hurricane protection and to boost eco-tourism. In Alabama, the GOMESA revenues have funded park expansions, land acquisitions for conservation and beach access, new boat ramps, fishing piers, litter traps and more.
