The Mobile City Council approved a proposal by Mayor Sandy Stimpson to raise the mayor's salary from $125,000 to $195,000, making it the highest-paid mayoral position in Alabama. The measure, which takes effect in November, was approved unanimously despite concerns from some citizens and council members about the size of the increase. Stimpson argued that the current salary was unrealistic and that the position deserves competitive compensation.
The Mobile City Council voted on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, to approve a proposal by Mayor Sandy Stimpson to increase the salary of his successor.for the office from $125,000 to $195,000. The mayor first made the pitch at last month’s “State of the City and County” event.
The vote will give Mobile the highest-paid mayor in Alabama when the measure takes effect in November, after the August municipal election. But Stimpson told reporters that some municipalities have city managers that perform the same administrative duties as the mayor in Mobile. Most of those positions, he said, pay more than $200,000 a year.
“The mayor’s position has only had two raises in 40 years,” he said. “I don’t care what the service component is, it comes to a point where it’s just unrealistic, you know, to expect certain things.” “The majority overwhelmingly was ‘no,’” he said. “They disagreed with the huge increase in the mayor’s salary.”“Maybe there’s some common ground,” he said.“My concern is when we start to raise a salary for people running for office, just looking for any employment instead of public service,” he said.Councilwoman Gina Gregory said the preferable way to raise pay for elected officials is incremental increases, as is done for city employees.
