With the help of his new fiancée, Kyle Dietz took on a grueling mountain race to spark his comeback.
Dietz can’t recall many of the details surrounding the initial presentation of his condition, but Cruse remembers it well. She started noticing the symptoms and unusual behavior in April of last year.
By late August, though, it was obvious something was seriously wrong: Dietz was no longer running at all, and he didn’t want to get out of bed. He would forget all about a conversation he’d had only five minutes earlier. Although he had always suffered from migraines, it became clear that what was he was experiencing now—constant headaches and blurred vision, impaired motor skills, reclusive behavior, and overwhelming fatigue—went far beyond that.
“His body was fine, his running was fine, but his eyes held him back,” says Cruse. His pupils were still unable to dilate correctly, leaving his vision blurry. And when in shaded areas, it took him some time to adjust. And so, with Cruse close at hand to shout out visual cues , Dietz flew through all 20.8 miles on Stage 1, 13.3 miles on Stage 2, and 24.5 miles on Stage 3.
“He’s one of the most humble athletes we have,” she says. “As a former MMA fighter, he had to work very hard to make the transition to ultrarunning. Additionally, he lives in Iowa, which doesn’t have the altitude and elevation that most trail runners train in. So he’s had to adjust his training schedule to make sure those things are part of his regiment.”
