With no data from the 2025 season to base our picks on, we're admittedly going to focus on some obvious candidates in the prop markets.Yes, this piece includes a look at whether Orioles OF Tyler O'Neill can hit an opening day dinger for the sixth year in a row.OK, enough preamble -- here are the two player props we feel best about as the season begins this afternoon with Brewers vs. Yankees .Paul Skenes 8+ K's -- 1 unitPirates at Marlins, 4:10 p.m. ETSkenes, as you may have heard, was phenomenal as a rookie, taking home NL Rookie of the Year honors and finishing third in NL Cy Young voting.He did pretty much everything well as a rookie pitcher, but his strikeout numbers were particularly impressive. Skenes struck out 170 batters in 133 innings pitched.His chances of recording eight K's or more today are even better than you might think based on those numbers, though. Last year, about the only thing stopping Skenes from piling up strikeouts was his manager. Of his 23 starts as a rookie, he went at least six innings in 16 of them. He recorded 8 or more strikeouts in 11 of those 16 appearances.Skenes eased into a full workload as a rookie, recording his first start with at least six IP on May 17. From that date through September 16, he recorded at least eight K's 12 times in 20 starts.There's a risk the Pirates don't keep Skenes on the mound too long today, which is why he's plus-money to reach this number, but we're nevertheless confident in him starting the season strong against a Marlins team that projects to have one of the worst hitting lineups in MLB.Tyler O'Neill Home Run -- 0.25 unitsOrioles at Blue Jays, 3:07 p.m. ETWe're not quite going outside the box with this one, either.O'Neill has hit an opening day home run to kick off five consecutive seasons , and we're banking on him keeping the streak alive today in his Orioles debut.The former Cardinals and Red Sox slugger has hit over 30 home runs twice in the last four years, with 34 in 2021 and 31 a year ago after injuries prevented him from playing a full season in either 2022 or 2023.It's hard to explain how/why O'Neill has hit the ball so well on Opening Day every year, going back to 2020. Still, this feels like a trend worth investing in, especially considering his opening day blasts have come against five different pitchers.After signing a big contract to join the Orioles in the offseason -- O'Neill inked a three-year deal worth up to $49.5 million with the O's last December -- he's well-positioned for a big Baltimore debut amid his new team's strong lineup.O'Neill faces a solid starting pitcher today in Toronto's Jose Berrios, but his Opening Day track record in recent seasons makes him hard to resist at this price, regardless of who he's facing.Newsweek may earn an affiliate commission if you sign up through the links in this article.
