The New York Yankees placed right-hander Domingo German on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hip flexor strain.
The Yankees recalled left-hander Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace German on the 25-man roster. Tarpley, 26, has a 10.38 ERA in six games with New York this season, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings. —The Washington Nationals slugged four consecutive homers in the eighth inning of a 5-2 road win over the San Diego Padres, the ninth time in major league history that a team hit four straight homers.
Alvarez, whose 23 homers are the most among minor leaguers this season, batted fifth as the designated hitter and hit a home run in his second major league at-bat.
