'I’m a proponent of replay. ... But it’s curious that on the three blocking-the-plate calls we’ve seen this month, the on-site plate umpire has called the runner out only to be overturned by replay officials,' writes Paul Hoynes (hoynsie).

ByCLEVELAND, Ohio -- This all could have been avoided if rookie shortstop Tyler Freeman charged the ball. Instead he laid back waiting for Harold Castro’s bouncer to reach him behind second base. But the ball had a mind of its own.

Detroit challenged the out call, saying Hedges, in tagging out Baez, had not given him an open lane to the plate. In other words, he blocked the plate. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli complained about the call before and after he was ejected. The Twins went on to lose four of their next five games to vacate first place in favor of the Guardians.

After the game Tuesday night, plate umpire Lance Barksdale told Cleveland.com, “We don’t make the judgment call on blocking the plate.”
