Here are MLB magic numbers, remaining schedules and tiebreakers for contenders through Monday, Sept. 22, along with playoff matchups if Wild Card Series began Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Manny Machado , Xander Bogaerts and the San Diego Padres partied in their clubhouse after clinching a playoff spot Monday night in San Diego with a 5-4, 11-inning over the Milwaukee Brewers.Playing at home with a playoff berth on the line Monday night, the Padres faced a lot of adversity playing the NL Central champion Brewers, who have the best record in the majors.
Before their first ups, the Padres trailed 3-0. After battling back to tie the game in the seventh, San Diego fell behind again in the 10th. And then after the Padres pulled even again, the Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the 11th. The Padres survived the threat, then won 5-4 on a Freddy Fermin walk-off hit in the bottom of the 11th to clinch a National League wild-card spot and slice the Dodgers’ NL West lead to 2 ½ games. San Diego is guaranteed at least the second NL wild card, which probably will land them into a best-of-three Wild Card Series against the Cubs, who have a 2 ½-game lead for the first Wild Card. The Padres are playoff bound for the second year in a row, the third time in four seasons and fourth in six, all as a wild card. The loss left the Brewers with a 2 ½-game lead over the NL East-champion Phillies for top seed in the NL playoffs. Milwaukee also holds the tiebreaker. On a light night of action on the final Monday of the regular season, the only other game involving playoff hopefuls was a series opener between two clubs barely alive. In San Francisco, Ivan Herrera hit a two-run homer in a 6-5 Cardinals win over the Giants that left both clubs opener 3 ½ games out of the last NL wild card. There will be a bunch of important series beginning Tuesday night, including an AL Central showdown in Cleveland between the first-place Tigers and second-place Guardians. Also on tap, the Yankees are home against the White Sox, the Blue Jays will host the Red Sox, the Mets and Cubs play in Chicago, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks play in Phoenix, the Mariners are home against the Rockies, and the Astros and Athletics square off in Sacramento, Calif.
