Teams and athletes pretending to be political experts expose their own brazen hypocrisy at best or support damaging fringe policies at worst, writes ZacharyFaria. Nobody in the MLB is likely to walk away from their uneducated advocacy anytime soon.

In the aftermath of the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays used their Twitter accounts to focus on gun violence during their game on Thursday. The Yankees earned the mockery of Rep. Ritchie Torres after they referred to Hispanics as “Latinx,” the made-up word used basically only by white liberals who have decided that the Spanish language must be altered for purposes of inclusion.

This issue hits close to home for the Yankees: Closer Aroldis Chapman fired a gun “at least eight times” in his home during an argument with his girlfriend in 2015, when he was a member of the Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees traded for him two months later and subsequently gave him a five-year, $86 million contract for the 2017 season. He currently pitches for the team on a fully guaranteed, three-year, $48 million extension.

This bold stance lasted all of three days. Kapler reversed course for Memorial Day because the optics of protesting the country on the day dedicated to men and women who gave their lives for it would have been less than ideal. Kapler doesn’t even have enough of a spine to commit to his performative, anti-American “protest,” which no one would have even known about if he hadn't told everyone about the big, bold stance he was taking.
