OZARK, Ala. —Mixon Intermediate School recently received a $500 Lend a Hand grant through its peer helpers’ S.A.I.L. campaign. The peer helper program is a group of trained students assisting other students and their peers with support through multiple factors such as social, emotional and academic.
Mixon was presented with the award letter through ThriveWay, a peer-to-peer support and prevention company. In the campaign, nominees must have successfully completed their evidence-based Peer Helpers PLUS program. Those chosen must have created a positive impact on change within their students and communities through their campaign. “It means a lot because we do things here with our students that people just don’t know about here in the community and we want them to know that we’re doing amazing things with our students here at Mixon and allowing us to get that award allows us to actually go in other schools are wanting to know what we’re doing and how we did it. Now we’re able to share that and hopefully other schools will grow and help students like we did.” Mixon Peer helper sponsors Mrs. Kristine Free and Mrs. Patterson worked with Mrs. Gloria McDaniel, the school Math Coach on the S.A.I.L. Campaign. In the campaign, they worked to determine which students were close to being proficient in math but needed some extra assistance to meet math standards. Once the students were grouped, a flyer was sent home to those parents who needed extra assistance and another flyer was sent to Peer Helper’s parents to inform them on what their children would be doing. The students arrived at school every morning at 7:30 before school started, got breakfast, and took it to the library for them to work together on mathematical skills Monday through Friday until they began testing for the ACAP. “It was important that they understand that they were responsible for their own learning and that we the thing, said Jeremy Suchman, Principal of Mixon Intermediate School. “They were responsible for their learning and the students were invested. The students who were in there to learn and the students who were in there as peer helpers to teach. They were all invested in the success of each other, and that was a really cool thing to see here at Mixon."and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
