Inspired by this natural filtering mechanism, MIT engineers have designed new water filters for industrial purposes.

Researchers often seek inspiration from natural systems to address technical problems. The mobula ray’s mouth is lined with comb-like structures called plates that create vortices. These vortices trap plankton particles, directing them into the ray’s gullet.

Interestingly, the mobula ray efficiently balances both permeability and selectivity in its feeding mechanism. The filter consisted of two flat, transparent acrylic plates. They are glued together at their ends, creating a long, narrow channel between them. This channel allows liquid to pass through it.
