MIT engineers have developed a lightweight, high-speed robotic arm capable of returning ping pong shots with impressive precision and speed.
MIT engineers have built a fast, lightweight robotic arm that can play table tennis like a pro. Designed for high-speed accuracy, the robot sits at one end of a ping pong table and uses a standard paddle to return balls. It relies on a set of high-speed cameras and a powerful control system to predict where the ball will land and how best to strike it.In testing, researchers threw 150 balls at the robot, one after another.
So, it balances similar problems of dynamic locomotion and precise manipulation.”Unlike Omron and Google DeepMind’s AI-trained ping pong bots, MIT’s robot relies on real-time prediction and control—an approach aimed at broader applications beyond table tennis.“These are really specialized robots designed to play ping pong,” said Kendrick Cancio, a co-author of the study.
