This article discusses the trend of 'misunderstood' villains in movies, arguing that while the concept can be compelling, execution is key. It cites several examples where villains fall flat due to poor writing, particularly from Disney and recent superhero films.

They say that a story is only as good as its villain, and there's certainly some degree of truth to that. Not every story needs an antagonist, but when a movie does have one, viewers like it when their presence is intimidating, they serve as a formidable obstacle to the protagonist, and their motivation is compelling. This last bit, however, can come with some caveats when not done right.

He's a criminal, yes, but his intentions are true. Batman & Robin is so poorly written, though, its campy tone so completely detached from any kind of seriousness that any kind of character motivation could possibly have, that the character simply doesn't work. His horrible puns are the final nail in the coffin.

Trying to excuse Wanda's deplorable actions in WandaVision? Not a good start. Making her a full-on horror villain while simultaneously trying to make her sympathetic? Terrible idea. Trying to get the audience to connect with the actions of a woman actively killing people for a goal that makes no sense? It's about as silly as it sounds.
