The 45-year-old armed suspect was sought after the fatal shooting of a law enforcement officer in Christian County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Richard Dean Bird is in custody following a manhunt for the armed suspect after a law enforcement officer was shot dead in the state's Christian County. Local law enforcement said Bird, 45, is dead following a shootout with deputies.

Missouri media reported that a second officer is also dead after the shootout, and others are seriously wounded. The Stone County Sheriff's Office, which was assisting in the search for Bird, said in a post on Facebook:"Suspect is deceased. No longer a threat to the community."According to local outlet KOAM, more officers were injured in a shootout with Bird that began at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. Another deputy was killed in the shootout, local station KWTO reported, and two others were shot, one with critical injuries. Bird had abandoned his pickup truck near Reeds Spring, MHSP said. He ran into a wooded area armed with a long rifle, KOAM reported, prompting a search using aerial craft, including drones, before he was located."A deputy in my home county was shot and killed today," U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, said in a post on X, reacting to the death of Ramirez."Erin and I are praying for his family. May justice be swift." U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt, also a Missouri Republican, called the shooting"a devastating loss" in a post on X. "As local law enforcement works to bring the suspect to justice, my prayers are with the deputy’s loved ones and those who served shoulder to shoulder with him to keep Missouri safe," Schmitt said., ours is different: The Courageous Center—it's not"both sides," it's sharp, challenging and alive with ideas.
