Voting rights attorneys say Mississippi should work quickly to redraw some legislative districts to ensure more equitable representation for Black residents. In papers filed Friday, the attorneys say it’s important to hold special elections in updated districts this November.

FILE - A version of a proposed Mississippi Senate redistricting map is displayed on a computer monitor at the state Capitol in Jackson, March 29, 2022. Three federal judges Tuesday, July 2, 2024, ordered Mississippi legislators to redraw some state House and Senate districts, finding that the districts adopted in 2022 diminished Black voting strength in parts of the state.

The judges ordered legislators to draw majority-Black Senate districts in and around DeSoto County in the northwestern corner of the state and in and around Hattiesburg in the south, and a new majority-Black House district in Chickasaw and Monroe counties in the northeastern part of the state. Legislative and congressional districts are updated after each census to reflect population changes from the previous decade. Mississippi’s population is about 59% white and 38% Black.
