Mississippi lawmakers propose legislation to combat illegal immigration by offering bounties to citizens who assist in deportations. The bill also includes stringent penalties for those residing in the U.S. illegally.
A Mississippi state representative has introduced legislation that would incentivize private citizens to assist in the deportation of undocumented immigrants. House Bill 1484, if approved, would establish the 'Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program,' allowing the state to contract with bounty hunters to locate and remove individuals who entered the U.S. illegally. Bounty hunters would be eligible for a $1,000 reward for each successful deportation they facilitate.
The legislation also includes punitive measures against individuals deemed to have entered the U.S. illegally. Those found guilty of trespassing by an illegal alien would be permanently barred from registering to vote, obtaining a driver's license, applying for state or local public benefits, and eventually becoming a legal resident of Mississippi. The bill's proponents argue that these measures are necessary to protect public safety and uphold the rule of law.Representative Keen, who introduced the bill, cited the tragic case of Laken Riley, an innocent life lost due to alleged crimes committed by an undocumented immigrant, as justification for the legislation. Keen also noted that the bill aligns with the priorities of President Trump's administration, which has made deportation a central focus. Meanwhile, Karoline Leavitt, Trump's press secretary, announced the commencement of deportation flights, emphasizing the administration's commitment to enforcing immigration laws and deterring illegal entry. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton expressed his support for the bill on social media, proclaiming 'The invasion stops now!
