A Mississippi bill proposes a program that would incentivize bounty hunters to assist in the deportation of undocumented immigrants. Supporters argue it strengthens border security and protects communities, while critics raise concerns about potential for abuse and discrimination.
A Mississippi District Attorney has announced his support for a bill that would incentivize bounty hunters to assist in the deportation of undocumented immigrants. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton championed House Bill 1484, sponsored by state Rep. Justin Keen, which proposes the establishment of the Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program. Under this program, certified bounty hunters could earn up to $1,000 for each successful deportation they facilitate.
Funding for these rewards would be allocated by the state’s General Assembly. Barton argues that the program is essential for supporting law enforcement agencies in enforcing immigration laws and ensuring the return of undocumented individuals to their countries of origin. He cites President Trump's emphasis on addressing the border crisis and combating illegal immigration as a driving force behind the legislation, positioning it as a way for local communities to contribute to federal efforts in protecting citizens. The bill also proposes criminalizing illegal trespass by an undocumented immigrant as a felony. Convicted individuals would face permanent disqualification from voter registration, obtaining a driver's license, applying for state assistance, and becoming residents of Mississippi. Rep. Keen emphasizes the safety aspect of the bill, citing the dangers posed by undocumented criminals entering the country illegally. He links the legislation to President Trump's administration's focus on deporting undocumented immigrants, asserting Mississippi's commitment to supporting this agenda and safeguarding its citizens. A similar proposal in Missouri has sparked controversy, drawing comparisons to Nazi policies from a local attorney. Attorney Javad Khazaeli expressed concern that the bill would lead to widespread harassment and racial profiling, echoing the sentiments of civil rights advocates who warn against the potential for abuse and discrimination inherent in such programs
