Amid mounting pressure from Major League Baseball , the owners of the Missions are working with Bexar County officials to hash out a deal for a new ballpark near San Pedro Creek Culture Park downtown.
Missions owners planning new downtown ballpark near San Pedro Creek Culture Park, source confirms “The MLB is requiring that all facilities are in compliance prior to the next season, and there’s a timeframe for each team on when they have to meet that goal. Unless we have a plan in place, we will not meet that deadline,” said Bruce Hill, a member of Designated Bidders. Hill and Sakai said the non-binding letter signifies to MLB that a proposal is in the works.
Downtown ballpark a field of dreams for developers — but would public benefit? The area near San Pedro Springs Culture Park has long been floated as a potential site for a ballpark, and a study commissioned by the city in 2016 identified it as such. The city of San Antonio and Bexar County have poured millions of dollars into turning the drab waterway into a 2.2-mile linear park with art, benches, walking paths, landscaping and benches.
