Mission Valley office building closed after testing finds bacteria that causes Legionnaire's disease [Breaking]

A San Diego County resident developed Legionnaire’s disease in April, not long after water pipes in the state-owned building they were associated with tested positive for “trace amounts” of the bacteria that causes the deadly condition.

About 750 people are assigned to work in the facility which houses the local offices of many state agencies, including the enforcement branch of the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Only about 250 of the building’s total workforce is currently said to be working at the location due to telework.

Legionnaire’s has recently had a high profile in the San Diego region with the loved ones of a San Diego State professor and a local plumber disclosing tragic deaths after infection. Brad Perkins, chief medical officer at Karius Inc., a local biotechnology firm that makes tests that can detect the bacteria, noted that it is difficult to become infected in an office setting because legionella must be inhaled when it is inside tiny water droplets rather than consumed by drinking contaminated water.
