After playing in theaters worldwide for two full months — the movie was given all the room possible to spread its wings — Paramount’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is staring at a disappointing end to its theatrical run.
Unlike its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, which debuted in the wake of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and didn’t get a proper roll-out in IMAX, The Final Reckoning didn’t face direct competition for at least a couple of weeks following its debut. However, the film’s divisive reviews and conflicted audience response stopped it from recapturing the past glory of Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Released in 2017, Fallout earned a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and grossed nearly $800 million worldwide in its box office run. The Final Reckoning needed to beat this number in order to break even, considering its massive budget of $400 million. Costs on the movie ballooned because of the pandemic and the industrywide strikes of 2023, not to mention director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise’s constant restructuring and re-calibration. The unusual strategy paid off in the past, with films such as Fallout and its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, earning excellent reviews and delivering massive numbers at the box office. But Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning presented an altogether different kind of big-screen entertainment. The densely plotted films revolve around Rube Goldberg-style action set pieces, sometimes at the cost of character and emotion. The Final Reckoning, which was sold as the series’ last installment, hasn’t yet passed the $200 million mark domestically, nor has it hit the $600 million mark worldwide. The film’s cumulative global haul currently stands at $588 million. This puts it ahead of Dead Reckoning, Steven Spielberg’s surprise hit Ready Player One, and, most recently, the massively successful Will Smith-led post-apocalyptic adventure I am Legend. Released in 2007, the movie was directed by Francis Lawrence. A sequel, directed by Steven Caple Jr. and also featuring Michael B. Jordan, is in pre-production. 'The Final Reckoning' Is Supposedly the Final Film Of the Franchise Close The Final Reckoning currently holds an 80% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope, The Final Reckoning is a sentimental sendoff for Ethan Hunt that accomplishes its mission with a characteristic flair for the impossible.” Whether the franchise continues with or without Cruise is still up in the air, but with Paramount undergoing a sale and the star moving base to Warner Bros., the future might look very different for the series.
